TALK BOOKISH (ABOUT YOUR BOOK) TO ME: Featuring Kristina Forest

Hi, y’all!

I am so excited to be participating in TBR and Beyond’s tour for Zyla & Kai by Kristina Forest! If you haven’t already seen my review, I absolutely adored this book and highly encourage everyone to pick it up. Zyla & Kai is both a fun and heart-clenching story about falling in and out of love, figuring out what one wants in life, and the influences our parents have on both our upbringing and relationships with others.

Bookish Road Trip: Where would you take your book and why?

I’d take ZYLA & KAI with me to an amusement park because that’s where Zyla and Kai meet and a large portion of the book takes place at an amusement park where they work.

Was there a scene in your book that left an impact on you?

I don’t know if there was a scene that left an impact on me necessarily, but my favorite scene to write was between Zyla and Kai when they go to the Homecoming dance together. It’s very swoony.

Tear Worthy: what was the first book that made you cry and why?

The Great Gatsby because of the ending!

The Impact of Social Media: What are your thoughts on the impact of social media on authors and/or the book industry?

I think that it would be silly to say that social media doesn’t give authors and our books added visibility. I think it can be very helpful and fun. At least I find it to be helpful and fun. I do think that authors shouldn’t feel pressured to be present on social media if it makes them uncomfortable or feels stressful.

Your Alter-Ego: Is there a character you wish you could be in one of your favorite stories?

I’d love to be Zyla’s best friend Beatrice for a day. She is rich and confident and cool. She has a huge house and an amazing closet and she is a very supportive friend.

Pen & Paper vs. Technology: What are your preferences and why?

Pen & paper for brainstorming and sketching out a plot structure because it helps to do this by hand. Technology when drafting!

A fresh new YA romance novel by Kristina Forest, Zyla & Kai is an epic star-crossed love story about first love and not just the will they, won’t they— but why can’t they?

While on a school trip to the Poconos Mountains (in the middle of a storm) high school seniors, Zyla Matthews and Kai Johnson, run away together leaving their friends and family confused. As far as everyone knows, Zyla and Kai have been broken up for months. And honestly? Their break up hadn’t surprised anyone. Zyla and Kai met while working together at an amusement park the previous summer, and they couldn’t have been more different.

Zyla was a cynic about love. She’d witnessed the dissolution of her parents’ marriage early in life, and it left an indelible impression. Her only aim was graduating and going to fashion school abroad. Until she met Kai.

Kai was a serial monogamist and a hopeless romantic. He’d put a temporary pause on his dating life before senior year to focus on school and getting into his dream HBCU. Until he met Zyla.

Alternating between the past and present, we see the love story unfold from Zyla and Kai’s perspectives: how they first became the unlikeliest of friends over the summer, how they fell in love during the school year, and why they ultimately broke up… Or did they?

Romantic, heart-stirring and a little mysterious, Zyla & Kai will keep readers guessing until the last chapter.
